Presidential Report

First 100 Days in Office and beyond…

Welcome to 2009! I hope each and every one of you had happy and healthy holidays.
 
It is my pleasure to report to all that our association is going strong. I have the privilege of working with a great team of members, officers, and community leaders to accomplish the tasks to advance excellence in nursing practice, education & research, technology competence and community activism since I took office on September 27, 2008.

We are in hard economic times but it does not deter us to reach our goals. PNA-NY, Inc remains committed to uphold the image and foster the welfare of Filipino Nurses as a professional group. Together, we strive to achieve our mission. We have been busy and I am happy to present our achievements during our first 100 days in office and beyond using President Leo Jurado’s acronym PRISM and its elements.

P: Professional Linkages

  • PNA-NY, Inc. has participated and collaborated with other Filipino-American organizations who are members of the PIDCI (Philippine Independence Day Council, Inc.) in the election of officers held on October 11,2008 at the Consular Office in New York City.
  • We had a great opportunity to network and make our organization visible.
  • PNA-NY, Inc. also participated in the recent mail- in nomination of the 2009 PIDCI Grand marshal committee.
  • On December 21, 2008 PNA-NY, Inc. was represented by Araceli Mendoza, our vice-president, in the National Federation of Filipino American Association (NaFFAA) fund raising activity in a great effort to establish the Filipino –American Legal Defense and Educational Fund for the needy. So far, this event has been the first of its kind in the US.
  • On January 25, 2009 PNA-NY, Inc we participated in the town hall meeting and community gathering initiated by NAFCON to reaffirm our commitment to protect the gains of the campaign re: Sentosa27++ complete victory.

R: Regulatory and Legislative Agenda

  • We had active participation in the NYSNA- NOLF and CDNAA meeting held on October 21 to 22, 2008, in Latham, New York.  This allowed PNA-NY, Inc. to have an active voice in the legislative and regulatory issues in the state of New York through NYSNA activities.
  • The next joint meeting of NYSNA-NOLF and CDNAA will be on February 10, 2009. Cindy Margalit, board member, and I will represent PNA-NY, Inc.
  • Oct. 28, 2008 – attended the meeting with Senator Pia Cayetano with Lolita Compas and Leo Jurado by providing background information on past PNAA/PNA-NY initiatives on ethical recruitment of nurses and the Sentosa 27++ case. PNA-NY and PNA-NJ Chapters at the Philippine Consulate Office attended this.

I: Inter-agency Collaboration

  • Participated in the San Lorenzo Feast day celebration on September 28, 2008 held in St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Together with the other Filipino – American Associations, we were able to showcase our “Fiestahan” tradition.
  • Collaborated with PNAA, and PNA-NJ to sponsor the Consular Simbang Gabi on December 15,2008, thus giving us great opportunity to be more visible in the community.
  • Collaborated with Father Erno Diaz, Director of the San Lorenzo Ruiz Chapel in Broome St, New York to sponsor Simbang Gabi on December 18, 2008. This is another opportunity to extend our community visibility and networking in the lower area of Manhattan.
  • On January 28, 2009, PNA-NY participated with PNAA, PNA-NJ in the Thanksgiving Mass for the Sentosa 27++ in their acquittal from criminal charges that they endangered their patients when they resigned from their jobs in a Long Island nursing home in 2006 in protest against recruitment violation. It was held at the San Lorenzo Chapel, 378 Broome Street, New York.

S: Services and Program Development

  • Participated in the 11th Eastern Regional Conference on October 24-25. PNA-NY, Inc Volunteered to help out in the welcome night program.
  • Held ACLS and BLS Classes on November 29, 2008, December 5, 2008 at the VA Hospital in New York. This was also a strategy to recruit and retain members. We provided breakfast, lunch, opportunity for networking and we told the attendees our future programs.
  • CPR /AED classes were conducted on January 26,27, 28, 2009 at the Manhattan Diagnostic Radiology office located in 203 E 60th Street, New York, New York.
  • On December 11, 2008 we had our Christmas party held at the VA Hospital in New York combined with evening educational program, dancing, opportunity to network with members & non-members, recruit new ones and renewals for those who are due to renew.
  • Our next evening educational program will be held on February 12, 2009at Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan. The topic will be about women’s health.

M: Managing Organizational Resources Effectively and Ethically

  • Held our Strategic planning on November 1, 2008 with a legal adviser to discuss 501 C-3 requirements, used handouts about organizational checklist to evaluate the standing of PNA-NY, Inc., The advisory board was invited. We sought for help and recommendation as needed to move the organization forward.
  • We all agreed to have an updated manual of our policies and procedure to be able to manage our fiscal resources and manpower effectively and in a timely manner.
  • We planned to hold our monthly Executive Board meeting every 2nd Thursday of the month to discuss our PRISM activities and progress reports.
